Pineapple OFC Strategy

Advanced tips to improve your game

Core Strategic Principles

1. Avoid Fouling at All Costs

A foul costs you 6 points plus all opponent royalties. Even if you're chasing a big royalty, the risk of fouling often outweighs the reward. When in doubt, play conservatively.

2. Build from the Bottom Up

Ensure your bottom row is strong before committing to middle and top rows. It's easier to place weaker hands on top of stronger foundations.

3. Think Three Hands Ahead

Every card placement affects all three rows. Before placing a card, consider how it impacts your ability to complete the other rows without fouling.

Opening Hand Strategy

Strong Openings

With your initial 5 cards, look for:

  • Pairs: Place low pairs in back, high pairs (QQ+) consider front for FL
  • Suited cards: Keep flush possibilities together in one row
  • Connected cards: Straight draws are valuable in middle/back

The "Spread" vs "Stack" Decision

Spread: Place cards across multiple rows for flexibility.
Stack: Concentrate power in one row for a sure win.
Generally, spreading is safer but stacking can be correct with very strong draws.

Fantasyland Strategy

When to Chase Fantasyland

Going for QQ+ on front is risky. Only attempt when:

  • • You already have a pair of Queens or better in your opening hand
  • • Your other cards support strong middle and bottom rows
  • • You can "lock in" the FL with minimal foul risk

Playing in Fantasyland

With 14 cards, prioritize:

  • Staying in FL: Trips front, FH+ middle, or Quads+ back
  • Maximum royalties: You have full information, optimize fully
  • Guaranteed no-foul: With 14 cards, there's no excuse to foul

The Discard Decision

What to Discard

When choosing which card to throw away:

  • Discard: Cards that don't fit any row's plan
  • Discard: Duplicate suits when not chasing a flush
  • Keep: Cards that improve multiple rows
  • Keep: High cards for front row flexibility

Information from Opponent's Discards

Pay attention to what your opponent discards (if visible). A discarded heart might mean they're not chasing hearts—or that they already have their flush and don't need more.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Over-Valuing Fantasyland

FL is worth roughly 5-7 extra points on average. Don't risk a foul (losing 10+ points) just for a chance at FL.

Committing Too Early

Don't lock yourself into a flush draw with your first 5 cards. Keep options open—you have 8 more cards coming.

Ignoring the Front Row

Many players neglect the front row. Even small royalties (pair of 6s = +1) add up. A strong front row also helps prevent fouling.
